Dr. Tindal prides himself on staying up to date with the latest advances in technology. Before he invests in a device, he thoroughly considers its features and whether it has a track record of success. This careful approach led him to invest in a Medit intraoral scanner. This remarkable device can streamline the treatment process and lead to increased patient comfort.
The scanner is a somewhat small, wand-like device. As we move it around the patient’s mouth, it captures countless images and assembles them into an accurate, three-dimensional representation of the patient’s teeth.
The scanner has a number of applications in prosthodontics. For example, it can help Dr. Tindal to:

Analyze a patient’s bite. Knowing how the teeth fit together is often a key part of designing high-quality dental prosthetics.

While a traditional 2D X-ray is great for finding dental problems before they’re visible to the naked eye, sometimes, Dr. Tindal needs more information about a patient’s dental anatomy. That’s when he likes to use our Planmeca Romexis CT scanner.

With it, he can create a fully 3D X-ray model of a patient’s teeth, jaw, and surrounding oral structures. This kind of image is not only very interesting to look at, but it also helps Dr. Tindal formulate precise treatment plans for more complicated procedures. For instance, he can use this kind of image to create a personalized surgical guide for dental implant placement that not only helps him find the perfect locations within the jaw to position a patient’s new teeth, but also perform the procedure while avoiding sensitive nerves to ensure a faster and more seamless recovery. Dental impressions help us create a model of a patient’s teeth and bite, and with it, we can plan and design a wide variety of treatments so that they blend seamlessly into the smile both functionally and aesthetically.

In the past, impressions were created by having a patient literally bite down into dental putty, and if you’ve ever gone through this, then we bet it wasn’t exactly your favorite experience!

Now, using a small digital scanner, we can keep the putty safely tucked away and make higher-quality impressions at the same time. The scanner can be easily moved throughout the mouth to capture dozens of close-up images of the teeth and gums, and using software, they can be pieced together to create a 3D digital impression. The entire process only takes a few minutes and even generates a higher-quality impression compared to the traditional physical model.

CEREC
At most other dental practices, if a patient needs to have a broken or decayed tooth repaired with a crown, it will take at least two visits to the office, a messy impression, and a week spent with an unreliable dental crown to do it.

Meanwhile, at Tindal Prosthodontics, we use state-of-the-art technology to streamline the entire process into one easy appointment where a patient can walk in and walk out with a completely repaired tooth in just a short amount of time.
The secret is CEREC technology, which stands for chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics. It combines computer-aided design and manufacturing technology to create fully-customized dental crowns in a fraction of the time compared to the traditional method.

After preparing your tooth to fit a crown, Dr. Tindal will take a digital impression of it, and he will use this to actually design your restoration. This information will then be sent to our in-house milling machine where the crown will be carved from a solid block of dental porcelain.
